The Second Oldest Pub in Ontario, The Dominion House Tavern, Celebrates 135 Years in Business

The Dominion House TavernLocated in Windsor’s historic Old Sandwich Towne, The Dominion House Tavern, established in 1878, is the second oldest pub in Ontario, thirteenth oldest in Canada, and oldest in the border region. May 9, 2013 marks 135 years of good times, great food, and generations of patrons enjoying drinks at this historic heritage site (designated in March of 1993).

For decades this has been a favourite drinking spot for University of Windsor students including myself back in the 1990’s. At the time I didn’t pay much attention to the history and significance of the DH. Fact is, I was young and just wanted to drink and have fun. I couldn’t understand why certain people made such a fuss about this ancient Old English Style pub. Well having aged a bit I’ve become a little wiser (or so I think) and can appreciate the significance of the history and heritage within the DH.

Of course, the generations of patrons who have visited the DH extend beyond University of Windsor students. In the early days, farmers would often stop in at The Dominion House Tavern during their trips to transport produce to Detroit’s Eastern Market. Judges, juries, and lawyers frequented the DH up until the 1970’s when the Old Sandwich Towne Courthouse closed down. While the Ambassador Bridge was being built in the early 1900’s many construction workers frequented the DH. Famous politicians, sports figures, and celebrities have stopped in over the years. For a complete story I suggest you read this excellent story that was published in The Windsor Star, “Historic Windsor bar celebrates 135 years of good spirits

Current operations of the DH, Chris Mickle and Kristian Neill, continue the tradition and will celebrate the 135th anniversary of the tavern. Thanks to their dedication patrons can enjoy an amazing selection of food and beverages with lots of fun events and live entertainment venues always lined up. So if there’s one pub in Windsor Essex (or should we say all of Ontario and Canada) where you can experience a surreal connection to history the DH is it.

For those who want to join the celebration then get ready for may 9th, 2013 as current owners, Chris Mickle and Kristian Neill, invite all past patrons, owners and employees to celebrate the rich history that the DH has been serving up for 135 years.

Details on the celebration can be found on the Facebook Event Page: Dominion House 135th Anniversary Party

So in closing we would like to say cheers to The Dominion House Tavern, may you enjoy another 135 years of good times!
