Othello presented by University Players (UP Windsor)
October 2, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - October 6, 2019 @ 5:00 pm
University Players (UP Windsor) opens this season with a thrilling presentation of one of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies, Othello, in an electrifying production combining love, suspicion and murder, at the University of Windsor’s Essex Hall Theatre on September 27, 28, 29, October 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6, 2019.
Othello’s friend and confidante Iago turns against him and twists the truth until he cannot tell reality from fiction, as Desdemona’s life hangs in the balance. It will be the first time UP has presented the play in its 60-year history.
“Othello is so incredibly relevant, as we live in a time in which our sociopolitical divides are so great that we see the bloody manifestation of racial politics, which create circumstances that make villains out of victims and victims out of villains.,” says Tanisha Taitt, director of the piece. “I direct contemporary work, but I very excited by how much of today and how much of human nature – which is timeless – dwells within this piece. I am compelled by the idea of making Othello feel more urgent and modern than people might expect, which still making it seem decidedly Shakespearean.” Taitt is a guest artist from Toronto area, who brings with her a wealth of experience as an educator, singer, playwright, director, and performance artist. She was recently named the artistic director of Cahoots Theatre in Toronto.
The season kicks off with an opening night reception for Shakespeare’s Othello on September 27 at 7pm in the Essex Hall Lobby. All community partners, guests, season subscribers and ticketholders are welcome to attend.
Evening performances from Wednesday to Saturday start at 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday matinee performances are at 2 p.m.
