Local vegan donut shop Plant Joy, located in Windsor’s Riverside neighbourhood, has been selected as the winner of Security ONE Alarm Systems’ 7th Annual “Who Deserves to Win” holiday campaign.
Security ONE Alarm Systems chose to focus exclusively on small businesses, calling on their local clients and community partners to nominate their favourite hard-working, deserving small business for their chance to win a Free Smart Security System.
A young entrepreneur, Jordynne Ropat – who owns and operates the vegan donut shop Plant Joy – was chosen as this year’s winner. The dessert specialist was one of over 70 businesses nominated and was acknowledged by one of their own customers who spoke of how much this young business has had to pivot during these uncertain times.
“Despite the pandemic, Jordynn made sure her staff was protected and put herself in the forefront to still be able to remain in business,” said Kristy Mailloux. “She didn’t want her staff to be facing customers and risk getting COVID19, but she needed to do something as a very small business owner.” Mailloux went on to describe Ropat as a creative, caring owner who has worked so hard to remain in business.
“We were so honoured to be notified a few weeks ago that we were a top four finalist,” Ropat exclaimed. “Over 70 businesses were nominated and we’re so grateful.”
Corey Robertson, Manager of Community Partnerships for Security ONE said this was the 7th year for the popular contest. “It’s all community driven,” he said. “The general public submits nominations and details who they think deserves to win.”
The Security ONE elves came to Windsor to visit the specialty donut shop, where they outfitted the business with a brand new smart security system. “We included door contacts, glass break detectors, integrated smart IP cameras, and of course the ability to arm, disarm, and control the entire system from anywhere in the world,” said Robertson. “We couldn’t be happier for Jordynne and her team!”
“I’m in vegan donut Heaven,” explained Robertson, while speaking with Ropat at her shop. “She taught me how to decorate doughnuts. Lets just say she’s the professional! But I did have fun trying my hand at it! The doughnuts are delicious! I may have had more than one!”
Ropat explained that “vegan means there’s no animal products whatsoever, no dairy, no eggs, no honey, so nothing that comes from an animal. It’s a truly simple recipe, a yeast based doughnut, we use organic flour, organic fair trade cane sugar. All the frostings are made in house, all the toppings are made in house.”
Ropat told Robertson that it’s important to be active in the community. “We love collaborating with other local businesses. We have lots of donut themed merch in the shop, we’ve got things all made by local women owned businesses. We also love giving back in other ways, so we support lots of local raffles and fundraisers, whether it’s a little league baseball team or a fundraiser for cancer, we love giving back and supporting wherever we can.”
It seems karma brought Plat Joy and Security ONE Alarm Systems together, both wonderful businesses who give to their community. That’s what Security ONE’s “Who Deserves to Win” holiday campaign is all about.
Chris Neumann, President and CEO of Security ONE, said the winning didn’t stop with the grand prize this year. “2020 has been hard on everyone, but on small businesses in particular. This year, we’ve given away a total of $10,000 in equipment and monitoring services.” Neumann noted that with local break and enters on the rise, this was the best way to give back to the community. “We’re extremely grateful to this community to have been in business for over 40 years,” he said.
A short video of the big day, including the installation and interview with Ropat, has been posted on Security ONE’s YouTube channel.
Security ONE has been locally owned and operated since 1978, providing peace of mind to Southwestern Ontario for over 40 years.
