Tecumseh’s Maria Giorlando, a 26-year-old Registered Nurse, Pageant Coach, and Public Speaker was recently crowned International Role Model Ms. 2021-2022 during the 10th annual Royal International Miss pageant in Orlando, FL, on July 17, 2021. This is the first time Canada has ever taken home one of the top 14 international titles awarded at the competition in its decade of existence.
The 10th annual Royal International Miss pageant kicked off it’s anniversary celebration with a week-long competition held at the Double Tree Hilton Hotel in the heart of Orlando, Florida. Royal International Miss offers a unique blend of glamour and elegance to the traditional world of pageantry and welcomes first time pageant entrants and seasoned veterans to compete. Each year, women of all ages from around the world vie for one of the 14 coveted international titles.
Maria Giorlando was one of six Canadians able to represent the country in this year’s competition. No stranger to pageantry, Maria has held the pageant titles of Miss Tecumseh 2016, Miss Canada 2018, and earned the right to represent Canada at the pageants 10th edition back in February, where she won the 2021 Canadian virtual competition.
The primary competition includes a panel interview, a personal introduction, an evening gown walk and a fun fashion wear walk. Aside from the main competition, there is also the opportunity to enter in several optional competitions for the opportunity to win additional prizes and cash scholarships. One of those additional competitions is the Role Model competition. The Role Model program was created to recognize and award young women for their outstanding community service, and each year seven women are recognized as international titleholders in this category.
The Role Model title is decided through submissions of a scrapbook, a resume, an essay, a community service portfolio, through the on-stage performance, and through completing a separate interview with another prestigious panel of judges related to a community service initiative that the delegate would complete for the year. With 5 years of local, national, and international community service experience, completing over 1500 hours of community service, and independently fundraising over $15,000.00 for various charities and causes, Maria already had all the makings of an international role model.
On finals night Maria stood amongst 42 women from around the globe as the overall winner of the International Role Model Ms. 2021-2022 title. Maria will now travel with her 13 other sister queens on various trips throughout the year, continue her volunteer work with Optimist International and as a Board Director on the Riverside Optimist Club, and is eager to share her Year of GROWTH initiative for young men and women looking to cultivate sustainable self care and impactful community service in their lives. Her mission is to teach young adults how to Live Life Alive through her 5-step self-care program called GROWTH.
