After being cancelled last year, organizers of the Miss Tecumseh Pageant pivoted to make the beloved tradition of sisterhood and philanthropy a reality for 2021. The pageant was held as an online virtual event with contestants joining in from their own individual locations over Zoom. The event was live streamed on the Town of Tecumseh website on Sat. Aug. 28. Following the pageant the contestants put on their masks and gathered at Lakewood Park where the winners were announced.
Miss Tecumseh 2019 Melina Svab carried the crown into 2020 since the pageant was cancelled last year. This was a first for the pageant which since 1976, crowned a new Miss Tecumseh every year except for 2020. On Saturday, Melina finally took her final walk as Miss Tecumseh before passing the crown onto the Miss Tecumseh 2021 Jordan Taylor.
“It’s an exhilarating feeling,” says Jordan. “But I’m more ecstatic that it means my platform gets a chance to receive the funding that it deserves and that my voice will be heard as a role model.” She explained that her platform is with Big Brothers Big Sisters where she plans to be a mentor. “ But I would really like to focus on their Go Girls mentoring group (for girls ages 12-14) which focuses on body image, self-esteem, physical activity and balanced eating. It’s more to give girls a positive body image and to work on their self-esteem instead of focusing on the negatives and really allowing them to flourish.”
In a Facebook post Jordan stated, “To tell you the truth, every single person who competed is worthy of this title. I have never met a kinder, welcoming group of women. A pageant is never about who walks away with the crown. It’s about the impact the individuals participating have. I wish everyone could see the behind the scenes effort of each individual’s charity work because you would be amazed at the consistent efforts and selflessness they have.”
The fourteen pageant contestants this year included Jamie Pfeifer, Kristi Koutros, Samantha Little, Natalie Pennell, Kaitlyn Baggio, Tia McCann, Sofia DiMario, Clara Mouawad, Nicole Walus, Taylor Gardner, Jordan Taylor, Shauna Bondy, Kathleen Hudson, and McKenna Silvestro.
