Finding a restaurant that serves burgers in Windsor is easy because they are everywhere. Finding a good burger restaurant is a little more challenging. MamO Burger Bar is Windsor’s newest restaurant that, to put it humbly, offers a good burger made with locally sourced Essex County meats and ingredients. From the looks of the just released menu these burgers look like they’re going to create a lot of buzz around town as soon as people get a taste.
The owners, Ryan and Tina Odette, are passionate experienced restaurateurs with a proven track record of fantastic establishments like Smoke N Spice and Sweet-T’s Soul Cooking. Interestingly, the Odette’s first restaurant named MamO Bistro was a favourite dining establishment that used to be located in East Windsor. Now their new restaurant revives the MamO name. In fact, the Mamo name is a tribute to Ryan’s maternal grandparents who originally immigrated to Windsor from a small town named Hamrun on the Island of Malta in the Mediterranean Sea.
MamO Burger Bar officially opens at the former Sweet-T’s Soul Cookin’ location at 1515 Ottawa Street in Windsor, Ontario, today, September 10, 2014 at 5pm.
Just one day before opening, the official menu was posted online for the public to get their first glimpse. The first thing that stands out is how proudly it displays that the meat is sourced locally. In fact, the menu says, “We proudly serve beef from Shawn Morris Farms in Comber, sold to us from The Butcher of Kingsville. We grind in-house daily!” Fresh local food always tastes better. Fresh local food prepared by passionate experienced chefs makes it taste heavenly.
In fact, finding a local restaurant that makes their burgers with fresh meat sourced from one local farm is definitely a difficult challenge. MamO Burger is one of the first in the region to highlight and develop their entire menu around this refreshing concept. That is why when people questioned Ryan Odette about there being too many restaurants serving burgers in Essex County he had this to say:
“A lot of people have been asking me about MamO Burger Bar, questions like isn’t there enough burger restaurants in this city. My answer is that there is not enough good burger restaurants in this city serving meat that came from a single farm not that far from here. Also other restaurants server burgers cooked on a flat top griddle with American cheese melted on it just because that is the flavour that we grew up on. We never stopped craving fast food burgers we just don’t trust the meat. Listen there are very few things I am opinionated about and burgers are at the top of that list.”
Well said considering the ground beef used in fastfood burgers originating from commercial slaughter houses have been estimated to contain on average, at least 55 different animals to, at most, an average of 1082 animals. Fortunately, the patties at MamO’s are freshly ground in house daily from one cut of meat at a time.
The MamO Burger Bar menu boasts 10 handcrafted signature burgers, appetizers and snacks, soup, chilli, sides, shakes, and floats. Examples, of burgers on the menu include:
Smokin’ Shroomage: Smoked Portobello Mushrooms, Swiss Cheese, Caramelized Onions, and Roasted Garlic Mayo.
Get Shorty: Jack Cheese, Braised Beef Short Ribs, Country Slaw, Crispy Onion Rings, and Horseradish Aioli.
White Trash: Smoked Bologna, All Beef Chili, American Cheese, Onions, Yellow Mustard, and Lay’s Potato Chips.
In addition, to the handcrafted signature burgers customers are invited to B.Y.O.B. (build your own burger). Choose from beef, turkey, lamb, or veggie patties, eight selections of cheese, several standard toppings, nine premium toppings, twelve luxury toppings, and a variety of signature sauces.
Patrons will enjoy the sizzling flavour that a burger made with locally sourced ingredients and inhouse freshly gound cuts of meat (from one, and only one, nearby farm) can offer. Finally, burger lovers can rejoice with a GOOD burger restaurant in Windsor thanks to the launch of MamO Burger Lounge.
