WIFF365 Oh Canada! Summer Special Events

Windsor International Film Festival presents WIFF365 Summer Special Event Movie Screenings for 2018 featuring Hot Titles (May 26), Oh Canada! (June 30), and Pride Weekend (August 11) at The Capitol Theatre.

Oh Canada, the next WIFF365 Summer Special Event, will showcase great films by amazing filmmakers, especially when they are from our own great nation! Come celebrate Canada Day weekend with WIFF as we are screening four Canadian-themed films by Canadian filmmakers, across seven screening times. These films demonstrate all the best aspects of being Canadian, and we are happy to bring them to downtown Windsor, at the beautiful Capitol Theatre. See you at the movies!

WIFF 365 Oh Canada! movie screenings will feature Our People Will Be Healed, La Bolduc, Ava, and Birthmarked at The Capitol Theatre on Saturday, June 30, 2018.

Our People Will Be Healed (9:00 AM & 3:10 PM)

With Our People Will Be Healed, Alanis Obomsawin shows us what action-driven decolonization actually looks like, using interviews and gorgeous landscape photography to represent this vibrant place in all its complexity and beauty. For nearly five decades, Obomsawin has given voice to the Indigenous peoples of Turtle Island and reflected back to Canadians portions of their nation’s ongoing history that they have forgotten, ignored, or silenced.

La Bolduc (11:10 AM & 5:10 PM)

In Montreal, at the beginning of the 20th century, a poor and uneducated mother of a family managed to get her family out of poverty by becoming a resounding folk singer. With the crisis of the 20s and 30s in the background and the first impetus for the fight for women’s rights, the screenplay traces Mary Travers Bolduc’s life, her dazzling career, her difficult marriage and her touching relationship with her daughter. Elder Denise, who played the piano on her mother’s records and dreamed of becoming an actress in Hollywood.

Ava (1:05 PM & 7:10 PM)

In Tehran, upper-middle-class teen Ava abides by a strict routine of school, violin lessons, and curfew. When Ava’s mistrustful and overprotective mother questions her relationship with a boy, Ava is stunned by this violation of privacy. Her tightly controlled environment exacerbates feelings of suffocation and isolation, and further diminishes her trust in the adults who attempt to regulate her life. That her parents, including her sympathetic but powerless father, seem more concerned with social optics than their daughter’s welfare only escalates Ava’s rebellious behaviour, to life-altering effect.

Birthmarked (9:10 PM)

In 1977, two respected scientists quit their jobs to conduct an experiment about human identity. They aim to raise three children contrarily to their genetic predispositions to prove the ultimate power of nurture over nature.

Tickets are available for purchase by cash at the door or online by credit card at http://www.windsorfilmfestival.com/wiff-365/summer-special-events/
