Caesars Windsor Cares presents the 5th annual Run For Rocky Finale Run along Windsor’s Riverfront in support of Gay Straight Alliances throughout Windsor-Essex County on April 9, 2017.
The 5th Run for Rocky will be the FINALE R4R Run/Walk. Organizers anticipate 2017 will be a banner year with dedicated Corporate Sponsors taking part in a big way to ensure that the legacy fund will be substantial enough to continue funding Gay Straight Alliances in our high school system for many years into the future. The Campana family feels that the Run for Rocky has helped to make great change in the acceptance of LGBTQ diversity in our community. The legacy of Rocky’s life and his advocacy work will live on with the continuation of this fund.
The event takes place at Dieppe Gardens and the walk/run starts at 1pm. A pre-walk/run gathering and last minute registration starts at 11am. Join in the fun, music, warm up party and family fun starting at 11am at Dieppe Gardens.
Participants will run or walk from Dieppe Gardens to the Ambassador Bridge and back in memory of Rocky Campana. An after party will take place at The St. Clair Centre for the Arts after the run/walk.
The after party features a pasta dinner and entertainment.
“What people will remember the most about Rocky was his determination to be the best at whatever he attempted and his ability to make everyone he met to feel special. Rocky took the time to get to know people and to help them through their life struggles.”
Sadly, in August of 2012, at 23 years old Rocky took his own life. He came out at 17 years old and struggled with how the world treated gay individuals. In fact, Rocky did his best to support gay youth by talking with all students in schools about accepting others regardless of sexuality, race, religion, or financial status. Run for Rocky is a fitting tribute to this young man and his memory.
“When Rocky walked into a room, it lit up. The ultimate goal is that the Run for Rocky will continue to light the way to more and deeper acceptance, tolerance, and understanding–starting right in his home town of Windsor, Ontario.”
The Campana Family along with The Windsor Pride Community Resource and Education Centre wanted to share Rocky’s story and help fund GSA’s in the local high school and post-secondary school systems to ensure parents, educators and youth have the knowledge and funding needed to help create Safe Schools and ensure there is a support system for youth in times of crisis. Rocky paved the path to make a difference while living and the Run for Rocky is the legacy that will continue to make a significant difference in his absence.
The 1st inaugural Run for Rocky took place April 13 2013 and raised over $60,000.00 with overwhelming company and community support. This event was the very first of it’s kind in Ontario helping to raise money to support the initiated GSA’s in the school system.
In the past four years that Windsor Pride – Run for Rocky has raised $269,442.14. In partnership with the Greater Essex County District School Board, the Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board, St. Clair College of Applied Arts and Technology, and the University of Windsor, these funds have raised the profile of Gay-Straight Alliances in the Windsor-Essex County region and has assured that LGBTQ students are supported within their school communities. In addition, this funding has helped initiate education programs for parents of LGBTQ youth, educators, and students alike. Paramount is the continuing support of GSA student leadership development and mentorship programming, anti-bullying programs, youth mental health issues, and LGBTQ support.
