Korda Artistic Productions Presents Mother Courage and Her Children
May 23, 2019 @ 8:00 pm - May 26, 2019 @ 4:30 pm
Korda Artistic Productions presents Bertolt Brecht’s masterpiece Mother Courage and Her Children, for the first time ever in Windsor, at Kordazone Theatre on May 16, 17, 18, 19, 23, 24, 25, & 26, 2019.
The play, a new translation by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Tony Kushner (Angels in America), is an epic tale that follows the adventures of Mother Courage, her three children and her wagon with its wares through The Thirty Years’ War, 1618-1648.
“A protracted, gruesome catastrophe for everyone except the handful of victors among the European aristocracy who profited by it.” – Kushner.
Mother Courage and Her Children brims over with the coarse, the common, the profane, the profound, the comic and the tragic… all the stuff that life is made of. Brecht wants us to feel, but only if we combine feeling with thinking.
Is Mother Courage an anti-war play or a call to arms? Come see the show and we’ll talk!
Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956) is one of the most influential playwrights of the 20th century. Brecht wanted his audience to feel and most importantly, THINK! He proposed an “alienation effect” in which the illusion of theatre would be exposed. A politically active Communist, Brecht had to flee Nazi Germany before WWII and the Unites States afterwards, eventually settling in East Berlin where he founded the legendary Berliner Ensemble which is still performing today.
The play will feature original music by James Atin-Godden, with a 30s, Klezmer feel, performed by a live band with Benjamin Goldsteinon keyboard. Other members of the band do double duty as both musicians and actors. Robert Godden plays guitar and the Chaplain; Lev Tokol plays percussion and Mother Courage’s younger song, Swiss Cheese; Jennifer DeSaulniers plays flute/clarinet and several parts including the Regimental Secretary; and Colin Zozit plays Bass as well as the Sergeant and other characters. The rest of the cast includes Tracey B. Atinas the indomitable Mother Courage; Kitu Turcas as Eilif her oldest son; Mercedes Ranjit as her mute daughter Kattrin; Roberta Quinlan as Yvette; Jeff Wilkinson as the Chaplain; George Vukmirovic Kelso,Patrick White, Jenny Hunter and James Neelyas the General.
Directed by Tova Perlmutter and Tracey B. Atin (both fresh from Cabaret) with set art by Jordan Marchand.
