Abridged Opera Presents Amahl & The Night Visitors | Christmas Concert
November 30, 2018 @ 7:30 pm - December 2, 2018 @ 4:00 pm
Abridged Opera present Gian Carlo Menotti’s, Amahl and the Night Visitors, as their 2018 Christmas Concert. Performances take place in Leamington (November 30), Tecumseh (December 1), and Windsor (December 1 & 2).
Amahl and the Night Visitors was the first ever opera written for television and was broadcast every Christmas season in the 50s and 60s. Composer, Gian-Carlo Menotti specifically wrote in the score that Amahl must be played by a boy soprano, which is how director and Mother #1, Erin Armstrong, came up with the idea to have student-teacher pairs come together in this collaborative project.
She said, “After featuring several boy sopranos last season, it was clear to me that Windsor has some serious talent in young singers and this project is a fun way to showcase the work that students and teachers put into cultivating that talent.”
Professional singers and teachers, Erin Armstrong, Amelia Daigle, and Lesley Andrew will take on the role of the Mother. While their students, Xavier Otero-Jones, twins Ben and Josh Zajac, and Braylon Belanger, respectively, will be playing the title role.
The opera provides a snapshot of an evening in the life of Mother and son as the Christmas star shines brightly and the three kings stop in for a brief rest on their way to Bethlehem. Nearby shepherds, sung by the Music Moves Kids Senior Choir, offer food and drink to the travellers. The kings will be sung by Windsor/Essex natives, Eric Miinch and John Holland and joining us from Ottawa, Norman E. Brown. Music Director and pianist is William Shookoff from Toronto’s Opera by Request. The opera has a running time of 60 minutes, is presented in English and is sponsored by the City of Windsor.
