It was a saxy evening at Rockstar Music Hall featuring Texas born multi-instrumentalist Vanessa Collier. Presented by the Canada South Blues Society, Collier and her band, featuring award winning guitarist Laura Chavez, bassist Gaby Vivas, drummer Nick Stevens and keyboard player Adam Ahuja, blew the roof off the venue with a mix of funk, soul and blues.
At one point during the performance Vanessa strutted through the audience with her sax, playing up close and personal to the delight of every person in attendance.
A graduate of Boston’s Berklee College of Music with degrees in Performance, Music Production, and Engineering, Collier performs with a confidence and attitude to match her musical style. Her strong stage presence can be attributed to time spent with blues icon Joe Louis Walker, having been hired to play sax and sing in his band after college.
A talented songwriter as well, Vanessa has been nominated and won awards in songwriting as well as for her saxophone work. In early 2018, Vanessa was nominated for two Blues Music Awards, the first one for Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year, which puts her in elite company with artists such as Beth Hart, Samantha Fish, and Shemekia Copeland, and a second nomination for Instrumental – Horn Player of the Year, in company with veteran artists like Trombone Shorty, Al Basile, and Jimmy Carpenter. She is a five-time Blues Music Award Nominee Overall. In addition, Vanessa took First Place for lyrics in the International Songwriting Competition.
Her latest album, Honey Up spent nine weeks on the Billboard Top Blues Album chart. A young rising star, look for her to be around for a long time, she’s already making a big impact on the blues music scene.
