The Canada South Blues Society Windsor hosted critically acclaimed Southern Avenue , the most exciting soul-blues band to come out of Memphis since the late ’50s and ’60s, at RockStar Music Hall on Friday, Dec. 7, 2018.
Back in November, during a local Blues in The Schools workshop, Eyes On Windsor spoke about the upcoming Southern Avenue show with organizers, Glen Myers, of the Canada South Blues Society Chatham-Kent Chapter, and Michael McCann, President of the Canada South Blues Society Windsor Chapter. Glen Myers quoted what Montreal’s award winning bluesman Paul Deslaurier told him, when asked what fans should expect from Southern Avenue. They had a conversation about Southern Avenue and the band’s vocalist Tierinii Jackson. Glen quoting Paul says, “when you hear this girl she’s going to freak the f**ck out of you, she’s so good!” And this quote definitely described what music fans experienced on Friday night right here in Windsor.
Southern Avenue absolutely blew the crowd away with raw energy and a powerful performance. The young band, made up of members mainly in their mid to late twenties, performed some fantastic new material from their upcoming sophomore album on the iconic Stax Records label, during the show.
The album is set to be released in early 2019. While “80 Miles From Memphis”, a track they opened the show with, off the band’s self titled debut album released in 2017, is about leaving everyone that you care about behind to chase a dream, it’s Windsor music fans who were living the dream when Southern Avenue came to town.
The band then put on another show in Chatham at the Kent-Belgian-Dutch-Canadian Club on Saturday night.
