Kay Oh Chay’s Self Titled EP Release Show Keeps Audience Hooked

Port Alma singer/songwriter Kay Oh Chay (Kelly Authier) debuted her self titled EP with a special album release show hosted by the Thirsty Butler in Olde Walkerville on Friday night (Nov. 8).

Kay is well known in the Windsor and Essex County region for her shows with husband Michael “Sugar” Authier as “The Oh Chays” and also as singer/keyboardist with The S’Aints, a local all star charity band that performs a Christmas show each December for local charities through St Clair College.

The sold out show also featured husband and musical partner Michael Authier, and special appearances by The Twisted Sisters (Liz Robinson and Stephanie Baker) on backing vocals, Michigan’s Jason Gittinger on drums and London singer/songwriter Sarah Smith who was a co-writer on the song “The Burn”.

Fans of The Oh Chays need not worry. According to Kay, the name change is purely a business move because she plays so many solo shows. Michael is still very much involved with the music, and depending on the booking, they perform as large as a four piece band. The song writing is all Kay though with the exception of “The Burn” which had some help from Sarah Smith.

The six song EP is a collection of silky smooth songs that highlight Authier’s gorgeous hypnotizing vibrato and soulful keyboard playing. The compositions themselves are thoughtful, introspective and deep with emotion. Kay’s signature sound is very much reminiscent of classic R&B/Soul and the grooves in these songs really grab you and keep you hooked. Michael Authier’s rhythm section holds it all together like glue. His steady percussion and slick guitar riffs and solos are a great compliment to Kay’s soaring vocals.

It’s really hard to pick a favourite in this collection but for me it has to be “Lean”, smokey and haunting in its melody with clever lyrics like “Soccer moms with heads that throb from wine and vicodin” and “When it comes to my sinning, I lean on the devil I know”. There are no bad tracks here. Individually, each song stands on it’s own, collectively they soar. This is a great EP and I can’t wait to hear what’s next from this super talented woman!
