World-renowned Irish country folk singer Daniel O’Donnell currently on an extensive North American tour thrilled fans during his stop at Caesars Windsor on Sunday (June 2). O’Donnell was joined by his six-piece band and longtime Irish singing partner, Mary Duff.
O’Donnell gained superstardom in the United States in 2002 attracting a legion of U.S. fans with his first ever PBS special – The Daniel O’Donnell Show. Since then, he has recorded at least dozen more shows with the network. In 2013, his PBS special “Stand Beside Me” was recorded at the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts in metro Detroit. He kicked of the concert at Caesars Windsor with his song of the same name. That was followed by “Footsteps Walking With Me” and “Old Friends Are Best,” a song from his latest 2018 album release “Walkin’ in the Moonlight.” The audience began singing along, “old friends are best, that’s what the old folks say, when put to the test old friends are best, we’ll all be old friends some day!”
O’Donnell joked with the audience at one point, talking to someone with a camera, jokingly telling them he had one request, “don’t make me look to young, 25 years old is the lowest he will go.” The audience chuckled.
Before O’Donnell took the Colosseum stage, a video played introducing him and giving a little about his background. During an interview, after winning multiple awards in the 1990’s, a statement was made; “It is very conceivable that you would be the first country star of this country (Ireland) to hit the American scene and make it big.” O’Donnell responded, “it is possible but it’s not probable.” O’Donnell was wrong! “I’ve been very fortunate in my life, I really have and I feel very lucky and blessed,” he said.
Performing all over the world O’Donnell seems to have a legion of fans who he can say, “Stand Beside Me” with their “Footsteps Walking With Me” and he would surely say they, like “Old Friends Are Best!”
In 1988, Daniel O’Donnell made it onto the UK Artist Album Chart, and has made history by becoming the first recording artist in history to chart at least one new album there each year for 32 consecutive years.
A consummate entertainer and one of the most fan-friendly artist on tour, O’Donnell not only performers Irish favourites and an eclectic playlist but his comedy and story-telling have endeared fans the world over.
