For the first time, “The Sweetest Event of The Year,” Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) Windsor Essex’s 18th Annual Chocolate Lovers Brunch brought four of the areas best bakeries together to compete for the title of Best Chocolate Dessert 2016. The event took place at the St. Clair Centre for the Arts on Sunday, February 7, 2016.
Guests enjoyed a full brunch prepared by the culinary students of St. Clair Centre for the Arts. The menu included items such as smoked salmon bagels, eggs benedict, cucumber salad, and roast beef mushroom and jus. Guests enjoyed brunch while the soothing sound of St. Clair College music student Jessica Wilson filled the room. All with a fantastic view of the Detroit river and skyline through the ball room’s beautiful large windows that extend to the ceiling.
“It’s The Super Bowl of Chocolate,” says Jeremy Renaud, Douglas Marketing Group Director of Operations.
While sports fans were focused on Super Bowl 50 the “Super Bowl of Chocolate” took place right here in Windsor. After guests finished eating brunch the Chocolate Lovers Brunch Chocolate Buffet opened. Guests enjoyed sampling signature chocolate desserts from local bakeries and vendors including Renee’s Fine Cakes, Sweet Revenge Bake Shop, The Little White Kitchen Baking Company, Licia Ruby, Nana’s Bakery, and chocolate novelties.
For the first time ever at the event local bakeries battled for the title of Windsor’s Best Chocolate Dessert. The competitors were Renee’s Fine Cakes, Sweet Revenge Bake Shop, The Little White Kitchen Baking Company and Licia Ruby.
A panel of celebrity judges made up of Arms Bumanlag. John Fairley, Jessica Diane, Daniel Gagnier, and Denis Duguay selected the Judges Choice Award winner. Guests attending the event voted on the People’s Choice Award.
The Little White Kitchen Baking Co. took top honours winning the 2016 Celebrity Judges’ Choice – Best Chocolate Dessert Award. Michele Bowman and Joshua Bowman’s sweet and spicy creation, a Mexican hot chocolate pecan tart with chocolate caramel sauce, pleased the judges palate.
Licia Ruby took home the 2016 People’s Choice – Best Chocolate Dessert Award. The talented culinary team of Johnny Oran and Chris Chittle put together a tasty chocolate and cherry verrien with sour cherries cooked in Dressed by an Olive cherry balsamic, chocolate cremeux and roasted white chocolate. Guests considered this to be their favourite chocolate dessert of the year.
“Winning was great! The Chocolate Lovers Brunch was a great networking opportunity and it’s good to see the community supporting this important local organization,” says Oran.
The demand for community and in-home health services in Windsor-Essex is greater than the available funding. VON nurses currently serve the Windsor-Essex area through Visiting Nursing, the Belle River Nurse Practitioner Clinic and the Pelee Island Nursing Station. VON also delivers community support programs including their Adult Day Program, Meals On Wheels and PASS (Pregnancy and Addiction Support Services).
All proceeds from this event help support VON Windsor-Essex to deliver programs that fill the needs in our community.
