Battle of the Hors D’oeuvres 2016 Critics Award Winners Parkside Grille and Twiggs Bar & Grill

Culinary awards were handed out to Parkside Grille, Twiggs Bar & Grill, Just Jeff’s Gourmet Express and Thyme To Go at the 2016 Battle of the Hors D’oeuvres on Thursday May 26, 2016 at Caesars Windsor in the Augustus Ballroom.

Many of Windsor Essex County’s top chefs from restaurants and hospitality businesses competed at the area’s most popular and longest running food competitions hosted by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Windsor Essex Foundation. This year marked the events milestone 30th anniversary.

Guests were food critics for the night and voted for their favourite hors d’oeuvre. The competitors were placed in restaurant or hospitality/catering divisions. A People’s Choice Award was awarded overall for first and second place.

In addition, a celebrity panel of judges picked the Critic’s Choice Award winner in each division.

Last year’s Critic’s Choice Award Judges all returned, including Ted Whipp, Chef John Kukucka from Essex Golf & Country Club, Chef Daniele Palanca from Ambassador Golf Club, and Pina Ciotoli from Windsor Eats.

Hors D’oeuvre: Crispy Pork Belly Taco
Filipino style pork belly, anise poached pineapple, purple cabbage slaw, Thai chilli, daikon radish greens, served on a flour tortilla.

Assumption College Catholic High School students holding up hors d'oeuvres they prepared.Guests also enjoyed the popular pre-event featuring delicious hors d’oeuvres prepared by Assumption College School Catholic high school students. Their culinary creations, were worthy of competing against the main event’s competitors.

In addition to this year’s winners participants included Smashed Apple Catering, F&B Walkerville, Budokan PanAsian Bistro, Enzo’s Trattoria, Marco’s Pizzeria & Italian Family Eatery, Caesars Windsor’s Market Buffet, Caesars Windsor, Thai Palace Restaurant and the University of Windsor.

Guests also had the opportunity to sip and sample some of the best wine, whiskey and craft beers from Windsor Essex. Beverage participants included Brew Microbrewery, Canadian Club Whisky (hosted by Canadian Club Brand Heritage Center’s Tish Harcus), CREW: Colchester Ridge Estate Winery Inc., Sprucewood Shores Estate Winery, Pelee Island Winery, and Walkerville Brewery.
