For the first time ever the FINA World Swimming Championships Opening Ceremony will be held as a stand alone event and Windsor is making sure it’s going to be a big splash.
“Traditionally, openings are held around the pool, moments before the first competition. Windsor wanted to do something different than the other host cities. We wanted to leave our mark as having hosted the most unique version of this event,” said Peter Knowles, Event Director. “Having an opening in the Colosseum at Caesars will set the tone for these championships. A powerful start, to a powerful week.”
The announcement and details about the opening ceremony were made during a press conference held at Caesars Windsor on Thursday, November 10, 2016.
Community members from local cultural organizations surrounded the podium with flags from various nations during the announcements. This small group, represented just 10 of the 176 countries that will compete. Judging from the excitement they exuded a tsunami of energy should hit Windsor when all nations gather at the same time during opening ceremonies.
The Opening Ceremony is the only place where athletes, coaches, officials and dignitaries will gather in one place at the same time. Approximately 1,000 athletes will be in attendance to experience the fanfare.
Globally known artistic director, producer, choreographer and performer Melissa Williams will serve as creative director of the opening ceremony showcase. Williams is a local talent experienced at directing opening ceremonies for prestigious international events including the International Children’s Games in Windsor and the 2015 Parapan Am Games in Toronto. Williams will put her high energy and extreme creative edge into action with a huge local production team and cast of performers.
The production crew of about forty people will work with cast of approximately forty talented locals who will dance, sing and perform. Guests can expect the most exciting athlete recognition in the FINA World Swimming Championships’ history. The opening will include exquisite Canadian content, beautiful performances and incorporate the event’s “feel the power” theme.
The Championships featuring the world’s best swimmers will be held December 6-11, 2016 at the WFCU Centre. This is the first time the elite international event will be held in Canada putting Windsor on the world stage. The event is expected to draw 35,000 spectators as top international athletes compete for 46 gold medals over 6 days in a temporary world championship pool to constructed within the WFCU Arena.
